SCOPE OF THE SYMPOSIUM
Barnacles (Thecostraca) are a very diverse group of animals, including acorn and pedunculate barnacles (thoracicans), parasitic rhizocephalans and ascothoracidans, burrowing barnacles (acrothoracicans), and enigmatic y-larvae (facetotectans). Their reproduction is also diverse in almost all aspects of life cycle: their sexual systems are mainly simultaneous hermaphroditism (combined sexes), but coexistence of hermaphrodites and males (androdioecy) and separate sexes (dioecy) with dwarf males are also common. Mechanisms of sex determination are also variable, including both genetic and environmental components and interaction between them. Their larvae can be feeding (planktotrophic) or non-feeding (lecithotrophic), and are released as either nauplii or cyprid larvae. The larvae represent different adaptations to find and settle on different microhabitats including both biotic (hosts or conspecifics) and abiotic substrata, and in turn, settlement strategy may affect sexual and mating systems. In short, barnacles are best model systems among invertebrates for considering "variations under a simple rule". Ever since Charles Robert Darwin found this, many researchers have focused on the reproduction of barnacles.
In this symposium, we provide recent findings and ongoing research topics on barnacle reproductive biology in the broadest sense, from genetic, morphological, physiological, ecological, and behavioral perspectives, in order to facilitate integrative understandings and international collaborations.
